More than ever, rest, leisure and holidays are rightly considered as essential activities. In this 1986 text, Father Joseph Wresinski reminds us how people living in poverty are all too often deprived of these.<\/em><\/p>\n

As summertime draws nearer, excitement spreads through poor neighborhoods.<\/p>\n

Children get restless and talk back too sometimes.<\/p>\n

School and its failures become harder to endure.<\/p>\n

Parents ask more and more bluntly for a little rest.<\/em><\/p>\n

\u201cWe can\u2019t wait for holidays time so the kids can go somewhere, and we can have some peace around here…\u201d<\/p>\n

But when they\u2019re alone they tell each other, \u201cIt\u2019ll do the kids good.<\/p>\n

They need to get away.\u00a0 They\u2019ll learn something.\u201d<\/p>\n

Some parents have been scrimping since February to put a bit aside.<\/p>\n

But most will have spent their savings already, on doctors\u2019 bills, back rent payments, and debts that have piled up.<\/p>\n

Everyone is counting on the government vacation allowance and maybe on a little luck too…<\/p>\n

Plans are made, \u201cWe\u2019ll pack up the kids and take off for one of those family vacation homes, or maybe to visit relatives.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cThis will be a turning point in my life,\u201d says Mr. Jacket. \u201cI\u2019m going to stop drinking. They promised us a month in the mountains. And then I really will get a job.\u201d<\/p>\n

But the closer summer vacation gets, the more fear grips the families.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe won\u2019t be able to go this year,\u201d\u00a0 \u201cWe\u2019ve been sick too often,\u201d \u201cFather didn\u2019t find a job…\u201d \u201cThe children all have to go; where will we get the money?\u201d<\/p>\n

So people start avoiding the social worker, because they haven\u2019t filled out the application forms…<\/p>\n

What good would it do?<\/p>\n

The children won\u2019t be going anyway.<\/p>\n

Whenever children start talking about summertime, grown-ups get irritable and find excuses to shout.<\/p>\n

Children stay out in the street later.<\/p>\n

It\u2019s no fun being home, especially in May and June when there\u2019s often an outbreak of repossessions and evictions.<\/p>\n

So the youngest bear the brunt of the tensions, and the older ones act tough: \u201cSummer camp is rotten anyway.\u201d<\/p>\n

I remember Mrs. Estienne. A few years ago, none of her eight children could go away. No money, no clothes…<\/p>\n

She avoided me for a week. Late one night, I was getting ready for bed when, without a sound, she pushed the door open and came into my shack.<\/p>\n

She sat down on a bench, her head bowed low.\u00a0 She was sobbing. After a while, she whispered, ever so faintly,<\/p>\n

\u201cIt\u2019s been three years now since they\u2019ve gone anywhere! And their father drinks.\u00a0 What\u2019s to become of my children…<\/em> ?\u201d<\/p>\n

Since no one would ever dream of leaving any child behind, how can we agree to live in a world where the children of the most underprivileged can\u2019t become all they want to be?<\/p>\n
