Published as an editorial in the Revue Igloos, No. 44, January-February 1969, this text was announced as a “reflection on the occasion of the forthcoming screening (in March 1969) on “Choses vues” (a French television series of documentary programmes) of a report on an emergency housing estate in the Paris region”. Father Joseph Wresinski feared that the graphic and realistic images portrayed in this broadcast, directed by Roger St\u00e9phane, would shock viewers. “This report,” he wrote, “reveals for the first time the painful face of misery in the West, without the veneer of pity. He concluded by saying that extreme poverty is shocking, but it should not cause us lose hope.<\/em><\/p>\n

Hoping – despairing,
\nbeing relieved – being burdened,
\nsucceeding – failing,
\nanticipating – being disillusioned,
\nreturning incessantly
\nto dashed hopes and deceptions.<\/p>\n

This is what fighting against extreme poverty means.<\/p>\n

Against untold odds,
\nholding on to a sense of wonder,
\nbecause they too are human
\nand believe they will cope with whatever befalls them:
\nfortune and misfortune,
\njoy and suffering,
\nhope unfounded and unfulfilled.<\/p>\n

Believing that miracles will happen,
\nthat days of anxiety, anger and aggression,
\nwill be closely followed by other days
\nblessed with understanding, dialogue and affection.<\/p>\n

Believing in spite of everything
\nthat by virtue of their humanity
\nthey will ultimately fulfil their human destiny
\nand find with their loved ones
\njoy, peace, happiness and affection.<\/p>\n

Believing they will bring to others the support of their failing arms,
\nof their bodies worn by privation, injury and disfigurement.<\/p>\n

Convinced they will commune
\nwith
\ngreater,
\nbetter,
\ntruer,
\nmore beautiful
\nthan themselves.<\/p>\n

\u00a0<\/em>Believing that with hearts
\nso often scorned, humiliated, broken and betrayed,
\nthey can still partake in loving relations.
\nAnd even certain, strange as it may seem,
\nthat their prayers will be answered.<\/p>\n

This is what fighting against extreme poverty means.<\/p>\n

To be torn apart by their hurt,
\nwounded by their traumas,
\nbloodied by their beatings,
\ndestroyed by their annihilation,
\nhoping with their hopes,
\nloving with their love,
\npraying their prayers,
\nstanding together with them to face such misery,
\nhunting it down, destroying it.<\/p>\n

This is what eradicating extreme poverty means
\npaying the price for justice, freedom, rights and powers
\ngoes far beyond ideas, good intentions and actions.
\nIt means bringing into being
