{"id":4481,"date":"2021-04-01T12:17:37","date_gmt":"2021-04-01T10:17:37","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.joseph-wresinski.org\/en\/?p=4481"},"modified":"2023-04-08T15:53:39","modified_gmt":"2023-04-08T13:53:39","slug":"who-will-roll-away-the-stone-2","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.joseph-wresinski.org\/en\/who-will-roll-away-the-stone-2\/","title":{"rendered":"Who Will Roll Away The Stone?"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>All through this endless winter,<br \/>\nI\u2019ve watched the International Year of the Child <span id='easy-footnote-1-4481' class='easy-footnote-margin-adjust'><\/span><span class='easy-footnote'><a href='https:\/\/www.joseph-wresinski.org\/en\/who-will-roll-away-the-stone-2\/#easy-footnote-bottom-1-4481' title='This is the message Father Joseph wrote for Easter 1979, a year that had been declared \u201cThe International Year of the Child\u201d by the United Nations. In it, the reader can sense his overriding concern to promote at the heart of this yearlong event a spirit that would enable people everywhere to draw closer to the poorest children and their families with deeper understanding and renewed compassion'><sup>1<\/sup><\/a><\/span><br \/>\nstarting badly for poor children<br \/>\nfrom slums and shantytowns.<\/p>\n<p>This year has begun badly,<br \/>\nbecause everything has turned against them.<br \/>\nSome experienced fires in their families\u2019 shacks,<br \/>\nothers, the unemployment and exhaustion of their parents,<br \/>\nthe chill of a home without heat,<br \/>\nand the darkness of a home without electricity.<\/p>\n<p>This year has started badly,<br \/>\nbecause people were trying to steal it from them.<br \/>\nChildhood institutions don\u2019t treat them like other children.<br \/>\n\u201cThey\u2019re retrarded,\u201d they say.<br \/>\nThey refuse to include them in their programs<br \/>\nthat could change something<br \/>\nin the lives of these children and their families.<br \/>\nNo doubt they\u2019re afraid<br \/>\nof putting the country and its citizens to shame,<br \/>\nif they point out that even today<br \/>\nhundreds of thousands of children<br \/>\nleave school barely able to read and write,<br \/>\nthat the world declines all responsibility<br \/>\nfor the future of hundreds of thousands of children.<\/p>\n<p>And yet,<br \/>\nthese children tell us about the school of their dreams.<br \/>\nIt would be nestled among fields of flowers,<br \/>\ncrowned by a giant rainbow<br \/>\narching overhead like a bridge.<br \/>\nThe children would be walking hand in hand,<br \/>\nlaughing, skipping, dancing on their way to school.<br \/>\nThey show us what solidarity means,<br \/>\neven though childhood institutions won\u2019t show them any in return.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI have to take care of my little brother because he\u2019s sick.\u201d<br \/>\n\u201cI have to do mom\u2019s work when she\u2019s not home.\u201d<br \/>\n\u201cI have to earn some money.\u201d<br \/>\n\u201cI try to smile, even if I don\u2019t feel like it.\u201d<br \/>\n\u201cI should sing to make my mommy and my little brother happy.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>They teach us a lesson<br \/>\nby sharing all they have,<br \/>\ntheir bread, or a piece of chocolate.<br \/>\nSomeone gave away his only scarf&#8230;<br \/>\nBecause grown-ups don\u2019t understood,<br \/>\nchildren come up with their own ways<br \/>\nto draw joy out of life.<br \/>\nNo matter what, they laugh anyway.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou know, we found a place to live,<br \/>\nbut it is too small for all of us.<br \/>\nSo the landlord won\u2019t let us move in.<br \/>\nThat\u2019s why my little sister<br \/>\nis being sent away to winter camp.<br \/>\nThat way there will only be four of us.<br \/>\nYou know what my mom told me? It\u2019s a secret:<br \/>\n\u2018We\u2019ll hide your baby brother in a bag<br \/>\nand sneak him into the house.
